In the 70s sitcom, "Happy Days," Fonzie was incapable of admitting he was wrong or apologizing. Today, apologies can catalyze lawsuits or stem them with seemingly no rhyme or reason to either outcome. According to some studies, patients claim if a doctor would have apologized for a poor outcome from the beginning, they wouldn't have sued. However, apologies are seen as an admission of guilt -- the 3rd rail of Risk Management -- and the first thing to go when any project, procedure, or even conversation, goes wrong. Some organizations have taken on a Fonzie Complex, never admitting nor addressing wrongdoing for any situation. Let's start the New Year off right by taking this head-on and start changing the Fonzie Culture by taking on the root of the problem, admitting that we were wrong.
